Where it came from
The Swampert-EX (XY55) card was released in 2015 as part of the XY Black Star Promos set, a collection of cards distributed primarily through specialized trading card game products rather than standard booster packs. This specific card was included as a promotional inclusion in the Hoenn Power Tin, which celebrated the iconic starter Pokémon from the Generation III games, Ruby and Sapphire. By featuring a powerful EX variant of the final evolution of Mudkip, the release catered to players and collectors nostalgic for the Hoenn region, emphasizing the card's competitive utility as a Water-type attacker in the XY-era meta.
The design of the card follows the distinct aesthetic of the Pokémon-EX era, characterized by bold, full-art or semi-full-art holographic treatments that emphasize the card's strength and status. The artwork showcases Swampert in a dynamic, high-energy battle stance, utilizing the metallic textures and 'EX' branding that became a staple of the series during the XY expansion cycles. It was designed by illustrator Eske Yoshinob, whose work on this piece captures the imposing scale of the character, aligning with the TCG's ongoing effort to elevate the visual impact of evolved Pokémon on the tabletop.
