Where it came from
The Switch card, designated as 163/160 in the Primal Clash expansion, was released in early 2015 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's XY series. This secret-rare iteration was designed to celebrate the core mechanics of the game, featuring a gold-etched, metallic aesthetic that distinguishes it from standard card prints. The Primal Clash set drew heavy inspiration from the dual Primal Reversion forms of Kyogre and Groudon introduced in the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire video games, marking a shift toward more elaborate, high-rarity artistic designs.
The design of this secret-rare variant was intended to elevate a utilitarian trainer card into a collector's piece through premium foiling and texture. While the standard Switch card is a common staple for tactical deck movement, this version was created specifically for the aesthetic-focused collector market. It was well-received upon release for its striking golden palette, which became a hallmark of the secret-rare trends that dominated the XY era, successfully bridging the gap between functional gameplay items and luxury-tier collectibles.
