Torterra

Released in early 2013 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Black & White: Plasma Storm expansion, this Torterra card represents the continent-like Grass-type Pokémon introduced in the Sinnoh region. The set was centered on the narrative conflict between the franchise's protagonists and Team Plasma, a villainous organization that sought to liberate Pokémon from their trainers. This expansion is particularly notable for introducing Team Plasma-themed cards, characterized by their distinct blue border designs and holographic patterns, which signaled a shift in the aesthetic of the competitive game during that era.

The artwork for this specific card, numbered 3/135, was created by illustrator Sumiyoshi Kizuki, who has contributed numerous designs to the Pokémon TCG. Kizuki’s approach typically emphasizes a clean, dynamic style that highlights the creature's connection to its habitat. In this instance, Torterra is depicted with a sense of grounded scale, emphasizing its role as a sturdy, reliable Grass-type defender. While Torterra is a fan-favorite starter evolution, this specific rare-tier card from the Plasma Storm set is generally valued more by collectors interested in the thematic Team Plasma aesthetic than for high-level competitive play during its time in rotation.
