Where it came from
The Torterra card from the Forbidden Light expansion was released in May 2018 as part of the Pokémon Trading Card Game's Sun & Moon series. This set was inspired by the narrative themes of the Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon video games, focusing on the mysterious dimension known as Ultra Space and the arrival of the legendary Pokémon Necrozma. As a Stage 2 evolution, this Torterra card serves as a representative of the Sinnoh region's starter line within a collection defined by the aesthetic shift of the Generation VII era.
The artwork for this card was illustrated by Kouki Saitou, a long-standing contributor to the Pokémon TCG known for his consistent and detailed style. Saitou typically emphasizes the natural environment of the Pokémon, and in this instance, he depicts Torterra in a grounded, sturdy posture that reflects its Grass and Ground typing. While the card was issued as a Rare, it functions primarily as a standard playable card for deck-building rather than a high-end chase variant, fitting into the era's design philosophy of balancing competitive utility with accessible collector appeal.
