Town Volunteers

Town Volunteers was released in 2002 as part of the Aquapolis expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was the final release by Wizards of the Coast to feature the e-Reader compatibility, a technology that allowed players to scan dot-codes on the side of cards into a Game Boy Advance to unlock data, minigames, or Pokédex entries. As a Trainer card, it reflects the functional utility common in the e-Card era, designed to support deck consistency by allowing players to shuffle cards from their discard pile back into their deck.

The card features illustration by Ken Sugimori, the primary character designer and art director for the Pokémon franchise. Sugimori’s work for the e-Card series often utilized clean lines and distinct, flat color palettes that prioritized legibility alongside the required card mechanics. The design is characteristic of the shift toward the aesthetic standards established by the Game Boy Advance era, and it remains a point of interest for collectors who focus on the transition between the original base sets and the modern era of the game.
