What it does

Stadium

This card stays in play when you play it. Discard this card if another Stadium card comes into play.

Once during each player's turn (before attacking), that player may flip a coin. If heads, that player chooses 1 of his or her Evolved Pokémon in play and discards the top Evolution card from that Pokémon, devolving it.

Provenance

Where it came from

Undersea Ruins was released as part of the Aquapolis expansion, which debuted in Japan in 2001 and internationally in 2003. As one of the final sets produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Aquapolis is notable for its innovative E-Reader technology, which allowed players to scan cards to unlock digital content. This set integrated the concept of urbanized underwater environments, reflecting the game's shift toward more complex world-building during the Neo-era transition.

The card’s design, illustrated by artist Atsuko Nishida, emphasizes the atmospheric mystery of ancient submerged architecture. Nishida, a pivotal figure in early Pokémon character design, utilized a distinct aesthetic that prioritized environmental storytelling over the standard combat-focused art typical of the era. Within the competitive community, the card is remembered for its niche utility within the E-Reader framework, marking a sophisticated period of design that aimed to merge traditional tabletop play with early handheld digital integration.
