Where it came from
Released in January 2003 as part of the Aquapolis expansion, Power Plant stands as a notable entry in the late E-Card series era of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This set was unique for its integration of connectivity features with the Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance, utilizing the E-Reader peripheral to unlock special data and mini-games when scanned. The card features a distinct aesthetic design characterized by the expanded card borders typical of the E-Card layout, which prioritized technical information and utility over the sprawling art style of later sets.
The illustration for this card was crafted by artist Keiji Kinebuchi, who was a frequent contributor to the early Wizards of the Coast and Nintendo eras of the game. Kinebuchi's work often leaned into stylized, clean compositions that complemented the functional, information-heavy layout required by the E-Reader format. Upon its release, Aquapolis was received as a complex and technically ambitious set, though the niche requirement of the E-Reader hardware meant that the card's intended interactive utility was limited to a specific subset of players at the time.
