Treecko

The Treecko promo card, numbered 16/40 in the Nintendo Black Star Promos series, was released in 2003 as part of the promotional rollout for the third generation of the Pokémon franchise. It was distributed specifically as a mail-in bonus for subscribers to Nintendo Power magazine, serving as a tactical marketing piece to generate interest in the Ruby and Sapphire video games. The card features the signature grass-type starter from the Hoenn region, representing the shift in design aesthetics that accompanied the transition from the Wizards of the Coast era to the Nintendo-managed Pokémon Organized Play.

The illustration was produced during a period when the Pokémon Trading Card Game was refining its visual identity under new management. By utilizing the Black Star Promo designation, Nintendo aimed to create a sense of exclusivity for players who engaged directly with their official publications. As a static, non-randomized distribution, it became a foundational piece for collectors of the period, valued more for its role in the evolution of the game's distribution history than for its competitive utility in the meta at the time.
