Where it came from
The Torchic promo card, numbered 17/40 within the Nintendo Black Star Promos series, was released in 2003 to coincide with the introduction of the third generation of Pokémon, specifically the titles Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. It served as a promotional tie-in, distributed primarily through select retail chains and events to build anticipation for the new Game Boy Advance era of the franchise.
The card features artwork by Ken Sugimori, the lead designer and illustrator for the Pokémon series. Sugimori opted for a clean, static pose that highlights the character's design as a starter Pokémon. As a promotional release, it lacks the traditional set symbols of the era's expansions, marking it as a distinct entry for collectors seeking to complete the Black Star Promo run.
