Where it came from
The Mudkip promo card (18/40) was released as part of the Nintendo Black Star Promos series, which emerged following the transition of the Pokémon Trading Card Game license from Wizards of the Coast to The Pokémon Company International. Distributed in 2003, this card was specifically designed as an incentive to promote the launch of the Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire video games on the Game Boy Advance, serving as a gateway for players to engage with the newly introduced Hoenn region creatures.
The card features artwork by illustrator Kouki Saitou, who was tasked with capturing the playful and aquatic essence of Mudkip. Saitou’s clean, expressive style helped define the aesthetic of the third generation of cards, focusing on a minimalist background that emphasizes the character. The card was well-received by collectors and players alike, marking an important transitional era for the hobby as the game design evolved to incorporate new mechanics like Pokémon-ex.
