Where it came from
The Volcarona card, numbered BW40 in the Black Star Promos series, was released in 2012 as part of the promotional expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the Black & White era. It was originally distributed as an inclusion in the Volcarona Collection box, a retail set designed to highlight the Sun Pokémon introduced in the Unova region. This distribution method was common at the time, providing players and collectors with an accessible way to obtain specific holographic cards that were not part of the standard main-set booster packs.
The illustration for this card was created by artist Naoki Saito, a prolific contributor to the Pokémon TCG known for his dynamic use of color and light. For this piece, Saito focused on capturing Volcarona's fiery, moth-like aesthetic, emphasizing its six wings and the intense heat associated with its lore. The design was well-received within the collector community, serving as a standout example of the promotional card art style from the early 2010s, which often prioritized vibrant, action-oriented depictions of Pokémon to draw in fans of the video games.
