Where it came from
Released in 1974 by the VoxBox label, this volume is part of the ambitious A Survey of the World's Greatest Organ Music series. The collection was designed to provide a comprehensive historical overview of organ repertoire, pairing specific geographical regions with representative works that spanned centuries of musical evolution. By focusing on the German tradition in this fourth installment, VoxBox sought to showcase the progression of the instrument through both the strict contrapuntal requirements of earlier masters and the expressive freedom of the Romantic era.
The performance duties for this survey were entrusted to organist Franz Lehrndorfer, a distinguished musician celebrated for his deep technical command and his role as the cathedral organist in Munich. The recording was conceived to act as an educational and archival resource, utilizing the high-fidelity expectations of the decade to capture the tonal nuances of historically significant instruments. Critically, the series was well-regarded for its academic rigor and its success in making varied, often overlooked, organ compositions accessible to a wider audience of classical enthusiasts.
