Lore

Why it matters

This VoxBox compilation gathers a diverse array of Baroque works, most notably featuring compositions by Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer that were long misattributed to Pergolesi. These recordings, led by Jörg Faerber and the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra, provide a valuable opportunity to hear these concerti played by a dedicated ensemble known for its focus on the 18th-century repertoire.

Provenance

Where it came from

The VoxBox label, operated by Vox Productions, was established in the mid-20th century with a mission to bring high-quality, often lesser-known classical repertoire to the public at an accessible price point. This 1981 release, catalog number SVBX 5154, serves as a comprehensive anthology of Baroque-era instrumental works, grouping Pergolesi’s cello and violin concertos with the influential six concertini attributed for years to Pergolesi, though later identified as the work of Dutch nobleman Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer.

The production features the Württembergisches Kammerorchester under the direction of Jörg Faerber, a conductor renowned for his dedication to German chamber music ensembles. By bundling these works under the VoxBox imprint, the label aimed to provide a scholarly yet performative overview of the Italianate Baroque style. The release reflects the era's focus on recorded music as an educational tool, offering listeners a detailed immersion into a specific period of musical development through a cohesive, multi-disc box set format.
