Aux Grandes Orgues De Saint Wandrille (Grégorien Chanté Par Le Chœur Des Moines De L'Abbaye)

Released in 1982 on the Editions Studio S.M. label, this recording captures the intersection of liturgical music and the architectural acoustic of the Abbaye de Saint-Wandrille. The album features organist Louis Thiry performing alongside the Abbey's monastic choir, an ensemble deeply rooted in the preservation of Gregorian chant. The project was conceived to document the specific tonal dialogue between the abbey's pipe organ and the historical resonance of the monastic space, serving as a contemplative study of sacred repertoire during a period of renewed interest in traditional ecclesiastical music.

Louis Thiry, a highly regarded organist celebrated for his interpretations of Messiaen and Bach, brought a disciplined, precise technical approach to this collaboration. Editions Studio S.M. was renowned for its extensive catalog of religious and choral music, often utilizing high-fidelity recording techniques to capture the complex reverberations of French cathedrals and abbeys. The recording was received by listeners and music scholars as a definitive sonic portrait of the Saint-Wandrille site, valued for its capture of the authentic, austere atmosphere of Benedictine liturgy.
