Ballett-Suiten: Dornröschen • Schwanensee • Nußknacker (Sleeping Beauty • Swan Lake • Nutcracker)

Released in 1984 by Deutsche Grammophon, this recording features Mstislav Rostropovich leading the Berliner Philharmoniker in a selection of suites from Tchaikovsky’s three major ballets. The recording was produced during a period when Deutsche Grammophon was aggressively expanding its catalog with high-fidelity digital masters, aiming to capture the precise, expansive acoustics of the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. Rostropovich’s approach is often noted by critics for its expansive romanticism and deep attention to Tchaikovsky’s melodic intensity.

The album serves as a definitive example of the prestige classical repertoire maintained by Deutsche Grammophon throughout the 1980s. The artwork and overall presentation adhere to the label’s house style, emphasizing the pedigree of the conductor and orchestra. Upon release, it was received as a standard-setting interpretation, praised for the rich instrumental textures and the sophisticated technical engineering that characterized the label's output under the direction of the era's foremost classical music producers.
