Where it came from
Released in the mid-1950s on the Czechoslovakian label Supraphon, this EP features the British singer Gery Scott, who became a notable expatriate performer in Prague during the Cold War era. The record captures the international reach of pop standards from that period, pairing the calypso-infused Banana Boat Song with the tango-inflected Hernando's Hideaway and the romantic ballad Secret Love.
Supraphon, traditionally known for its classical and folk archives, utilized these recordings to provide Eastern European listeners with contemporary Western hits. The arrangements by Billy's Banjo Band reflect the eclectic and slightly novelty-oriented production styles common in international pop singles of the time, aiming to bridge cultural divides through familiar, upbeat, and accessible musical arrangements.
