Beethoven: Streichquartette D-Dur Op.18 Nr.3 Und C-moll Op.18 Nr.4 = Strings Quartet In D Major And In C Minor = Quators À Cordes En Ré Majeur Et En Ut Mineur

Released in 1964 on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, this recording features the Amadeus Quartet performing Beethoven's String Quartets Op. 18, Nos. 3 and 4. This specific release is part of the ensemble's critically acclaimed cycle of the complete Beethoven quartets, a project that solidified their reputation as one of the preeminent chamber music groups of the mid-20th century. The recording was produced during a peak period for the label, which was renowned for its 'Yellow Label' aesthetic and high-fidelity standards in capturing European classical ensembles.

The interpretation is characteristic of the Amadeus Quartet's style, known for its intense technical precision, rich tonal palette, and a deeply expressive, almost conversational approach to the music. Formed by refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe, the quartet brought a distinctive collaborative spirit to their performances, which critics often noted for its warmth and cohesive blend. These Op. 18 quartets were Beethoven’s first foray into the genre, and this recording is widely regarded for balancing the composer's structural innovation with the lyrical grace expected of the Viennese tradition.
