Provenance

Where it came from

Released by Polydor under catalog number 237 475, this recording captures a nostalgic potpourri of German folk and parlor songs framed by the sentiment Behüt' Dich Gott, Es War So Schön Gewesen. Orchestrated by Franz Josef Breuer, a conductor and arranger known for his work in the mid-twentieth century German Schlager and light music scene, the record was intended to evoke the intimacy and warmth of the nineteenth-century domestic drawing room. It served as a sonic postcard of a bygone era, appealing to postwar audiences seeking comfort in the familiarity of traditional, sentimental melodies.

The production reflects the mid-century trend of 'Old Grandmother's Parlor' themed compilations, which aimed to preserve popular cultural heritage through polished, accessible orchestral arrangements. Breuer's approach prioritized sweeping strings and gentle rhythms, designed to provide a backdrop of gentle reminiscence rather than historical accuracy. The release was typical of Polydor’s catalog during this period, positioning light classical and traditional music as high-quality entertainment for mature home listeners.
