Where it came from
Released in 2005 on the Grand Hotel Van Cleef label, this record represents an early collaborative milestone for Olli Schulz and the duo Der Hund Marie. The project emerged from the burgeoning Hamburg indie scene, reflecting a shift toward a blend of singer-songwriter sensibilities and unconventional, often humorous, storytelling that characterized Schulz's early work. The title, which translates to 'If you break my heart, then I will break your legs,' captures the irreverent and tragicomic tone that would define his artistic persona for years to come.
The design and production were rooted in the label's aesthetic of supporting independent, artist-driven narratives. By grounding the release in raw instrumentation and candid lyrics, Schulz sought to bridge the gap between folk traditions and modern German indie pop. Upon its release, the album was well-received within Germany's alternative music circles, praised for its lyrical wit and the stark, intimate chemistry between Schulz and Der Hund Marie, helping to establish the foundation for their respective follow-up careers.
