Carmen - Carmen

Released in 1972 on the Musart label, this recording features the Peruvian singer Jimmy Santy interpreting the classic title track. During this period, Santy was transitioning from his roots in nueva ola and beat music toward more established balladry and popular song interpretations, reflecting a shift in the Latin American recording industry's appetite for lush, orchestrated pop arrangements of established standards.

The record sits within Musart’s extensive mid-century catalog, a label renowned for capturing the diversity of the Mexican and broader Latin music scene of the 1970s. The production relies on the evocative, dramatic flair typical of mid-century Spanish-language pop, aiming to provide a accessible, radio-friendly rendition of the material that aligned with the romantic vocal styles prevalent across the region at the time.
