Where it came from
The Carmen Suite was originally conceived in 1967 when composer Rodion Shchedrin arranged Georges Bizet's opera music for strings and percussion to showcase his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. The arrangement was intended to strip away the operatic vocal lines, focusing instead on a percussive, rhythmic, and modernized interpretation that emphasized the dramatic tension of the narrative through instrumentation alone.
This 1992 Melodiya pressing, featuring the Moscow Virtuosi conducted by Vladimir Spivakov, represents a later era of the recording's legacy. By this time, the suite had cemented itself as a staple of the Soviet and post-Soviet classical canon. Spivakov’s interpretation is noted for its precision and clarity, reflecting the ensemble’s commitment to nuanced, chamber-style refinement of Shchedrin’s bold, angular orchestration.
