Where it came from
The Carmen Suite was conceived in 1967 as a collaboration between the Soviet composer Rodion Shchedrin and his wife, the legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Originally intended as a soundtrack for a ballet performance at the Bolshoi Theatre, the work reinterprets Georges Bizet’s opera themes through an instrumentation consisting exclusively of strings and percussion. Shchedrin aimed to capture the dramatic essence of the original score while stripping away the vocal lines to focus on the rhythmic and textural potential of the orchestral arrangement.
The recording on the Melodiya label, catalog number C 01659-60, features the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra under the baton of Gennadi Rozhdestvensky. Upon its debut, the suite faced resistance from traditionalists who viewed the adaptation as an affront to Bizet’s masterpiece, yet it eventually gained international acclaim for its innovative vitality. The release serves as a defining artifact of mid-century Soviet musical experimentation, showcasing the technical precision of the Melodiya recording studios and the unique artistic vision of the Shchedrin-Plisetskaya partnership.
