Where it came from
The Carmen-Suite was composed in 1967 by Rodion Shchedrin as a transcription of Georges Bizet's famous opera Carmen, specifically designed for a chamber string orchestra and a massive percussion section. Shchedrin intended the work to be a ballet score for his wife, the legendary prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, seeking to translate the opera's dramatic themes into a new, vibrant instrumental language that honored the original melodies while embracing modern orchestral textures.
This specific recording was issued by the Soviet state label Melodiya in 1978, catalog number 33 С01659-60, capturing the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra under the baton of Gennady Rozhdestvensky. Upon its debut, the piece was initially met with some skepticism from traditionalists who found the radical reimagining of Bizet's work unconventional, yet it ultimately secured its place as a staple of the repertoire, celebrated for its technical brilliance and rhythmic intensity.
