Carmen-Suite

The Carmen Suite was conceived in 1967 as a collaborative re-imagining of Georges Bizet’s celebrated opera for a ballet production. Rodion Shchedrin arranged the music for his wife, the legendary prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, stripping away the traditional vocal score in favor of a vibrant, percussive orchestration centered on strings and a vast array of percussion instruments. This adaptation was designed to emphasize the dramatic tension and fiery temperament of the narrative, moving away from operatic grandeur toward a more modern, kinetic choreographic experience.

Released under the state-run Melodiya label during the Soviet era, this recording remains a definitive artifact of 20th-century Russian musical fusion. The work was initially met with some resistance by conservative cultural officials who viewed the radical transformation of a Western classic with skepticism, yet it eventually gained international acclaim for its inventive orchestration. The record serves as a pivotal example of how Soviet composers engaged with canonical European repertoire to create new, emotionally charged works for the stage.
