Carmen-Suite 1 ･ L'Arlésienne-Suites 1 & 2

Released in 1971 on the Deutsche Grammophon label, this recording brings together two of Georges Bizet's most celebrated orchestral works. The sessions feature the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Herbert von Karajan, a collaboration that defined the label's prestige during the late twentieth century. These suites represent a refined selection of music from Bizet's opera Carmen and his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play, L'Arlésienne, showcasing the composer’s gift for evocative, rhythmic melody.

The production is characteristic of Karajan's tenure in Berlin, emphasizing polished textures and a lush, expansive soundscape. Artistically, the release aimed to capture the vibrant, Mediterranean character of the scores through the technical precision of the Philharmonic. Upon its release, the recording was well-received by critics and audiences alike, becoming a staple of the classical canon and solidifying its place within Deutsche Grammophon’s extensive catalog for its balance of dramatic flair and orchestral sophistication.
