Carmen-Suites Nos 1 And 2 L'Arlesienne-Suites Nos 1 And 2

This recording features the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux under the direction of conductor Igor Markevitch, capturing Georges Bizet's suites from his operas Carmen and L'Arlésienne. Released as part of the Philips Gold Label Classical Favourites series, this pressing reflects the mid-century European tradition of bringing high-fidelity orchestral performances of standard concert repertoire to a broader domestic audience.

The production leans on the technical standards of the Philips label, known for its emphasis on clear, balanced stereo imaging during the classical revival of the 1960s and 1970s. Igor Markevitch, a protégé of Diaghilev and a highly regarded interpreter of 19th-century French music, aimed for a precise and dramatic reading of Bizet's scores, ensuring the emotional intensity of the opera suites was preserved without resorting to over-sentimentalized pacing.
