Where it came from
Released in 1958, this recording of Georges Bizet's suites from Carmen and L'Arlésienne features the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande conducted by Ernest Ansermet. The recording was produced during a prolific period for the ensemble in Geneva, capturing the label's signature high-fidelity sound which was highly regarded for its clarity and balance during the early stereophonic era.
Ernest Ansermet, the Swiss conductor who founded the orchestra, was renowned for his precision and analytical approach to orchestral color. His interpretation of Bizet's music was designed to highlight the transparency and rhythmic vitality of the scores rather than leaning into overly romanticized sentimentality. The release was part of the prestigious SXL series, which sought to showcase the full dynamic range of Decca’s engineering team at the time.
