Chant Grégorien - La Messe Des Morts - Les Funérailles

This recording of the Requiem Mass, or Messe des Morts, captures the rigorous liturgical tradition of the Benedictine monks of Solesmes Abbey. Produced by Decca in 1967, the release reflects the abbey's long-standing dedication to preserving authentic Gregorian chant. Under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, the choir became internationally renowned for their rhythmic precision and commitment to restoring the aesthetic purity of medieval plainchant, which had been standardized by the monks of Solesmes over several decades of research into early musical manuscripts.

The album serves as a definitive document of the Solesmes school of performance, which emphasizes the fluid, speech-like rhythm of the chant rather than a measured metrical beat. By the time this pressing was released, the recordings from the Abbey had become primary references for musicologists and religious institutions worldwide. The sparse, atmospheric production captures the acoustic qualities of the abbey, aiming to translate the contemplative, meditative experience of the funeral liturgy into a recorded medium for the secular and religious listener alike.
