Chant Grégorien - Pâques

The Chant Grégorien - Pâques recording was produced by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard, a pivotal figure in the twentieth-century restoration of Gregorian chant. Released by Decca in 1967, this album captures the solemnity of the Easter liturgy. The abbey gained international renown for its rigorous musicological work, specifically the restoration of authentic performance practices based on medieval manuscripts, which they promoted through their long-standing partnership with Decca Records.

Dom Joseph Gajard’s approach prioritized a fluid, prayerful interpretation that broke away from the rigid, metronomic styles that had previously dominated liturgical music. His direction sought to capture the natural rhythm of the Latin text, emphasizing the spiritual depth of the monastic tradition. Upon its release, the recording was widely recognized for its high fidelity and historical significance, becoming a benchmark for liturgical music documentation and instrumental in the mid-century revival of interest in plainchant among both the faithful and music enthusiasts.
