Where it came from
Released in 1973 under the Decca label, this recording captures the liturgical traditions of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes. The Benedictine monks of Solesmes are internationally recognized for their meticulous scholarship and dedication to the preservation of authentic Gregorian chant, a practice that gained significant academic and popular interest throughout the mid-20th century.
The recording was directed by Dom Joseph Gajard, the longtime choirmaster of the abbey who was instrumental in refining the ensemble's approach to the rhythmic interpretation of neumatic notation. His work sought to restore the fluidity and expressive nuance of early chant, moving away from the rigid, metronomic styles that had previously dominated liturgical music performance.
