Where it came from
Released in 1982 on the Auvidis label, this recording features Gaëtan de Courrèges performing the works of Père Aimé Duval. Père Duval was a French Jesuit priest and folk singer who achieved significant fame during the 1950s and 1960s for his guitar-accompanied songs, which sought to bring religious themes into the popular folk music space of the era. The record serves as a tribute to Duval's influence on liturgical and spiritual music in France.
The production reflects the stylistic legacy of the 'prêtre chanteur' movement, characterized by simple, acoustic arrangements intended to evoke sincerity and accessibility. Gaëtan de Courrèges, a prominent figure in French Christian folk music in his own right, approaches these interpretations with a focus on preserving the gentle, reflective spirit of Duval’s original compositions. The album is part of a broader mid-century effort by the Catholic Church in France to modernize its presence through contemporary media.
