Where it came from
Released by Disques A Charlin, this recording captures the liturgical chants of the monks of the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault. Established in the mid-20th century, the label sought to document authentic monastic traditions, prioritizing acoustic clarity and a reverent atmosphere that mirrors the architectural stillness of the Romanesque abbey itself.
The recording serves as a definitive example of mid-century liturgical documentation, focusing on the preservation of Gregorian chant without the interference of contemporary arrangements. André Charlin, the recording engineer and founder of the label, was widely respected for his minimalist, high-fidelity approach, which captured the natural resonance of the monks' voices within the abbey's stone walls, resulting in a sound profile that remains highly regarded by audiophiles and scholars of sacred music.
