Where it came from
Released in 1965 on the Zafiro label, this single features Rosalía—the Spanish pop icon of the 1960s, not the contemporary artist—performing 'Chica Ye-Yé' and 'Muñeca De Cera.' The 'Ye-Yé' movement was a significant cultural phenomenon in mid-sixties Spain, representing a youth-driven embrace of Western pop, rock, and fashion that emerged against the backdrop of a conservative society. These recordings serve as quintessential examples of that era's bright, orchestrated pop sound.
The tracks were designed to capitalize on the rising popularity of the Yé-yé style, which took its name from the 'yeah, yeah, yeah' refrain of the Beatles. Zafiro positioned these releases to appeal to a demographic eager for upbeat, melodic music that felt modern and international. The records were well-received by the domestic market at the time, helping to solidify the genre's footprint in Spanish popular culture and contributing to the enduring nostalgia for the sound of the mid-sixties.
