Where it came from
Released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1980, this compilation album was part of the label's mid-priced series, designed to bring canonical choral repertoire to a broader audience. The collection gathers famous religious and secular choral works by composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner, Bizet, and the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria. By leveraging their extensive archive of high-fidelity recordings, Deutsche Grammophon aimed to provide listeners with a curated listening experience that emphasized the spiritual and melodic accessibility of classical choral music.
The album's design follows the clean, authoritative aesthetic for which Deutsche Grammophon became synonymous during the twentieth century, characterized by the iconic yellow border that signals a standard of recording excellence. The selection reflects the era's focus on repackaging legacy performances into thematic anthologies, a strategy that allowed historical recordings by renowned ensembles to remain commercially relevant. As a mid-range archival release, it was well-received by listeners seeking a convenient, reliable introduction to the choral traditions of Western classical music.
