Schwanensee (Swan Lake) / Dornröschen (The Sleeping Beauty)

Released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1972, this recording features the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The album captures highlights from Tchaikovsky’s most iconic ballets, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. The selection was recorded during a period when Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker were refining their signature lush, precise sound, aiming to bring a symphonic gravity to these classical dance scores.

The album features prominent violin solos by Michel Schwalbé, who served as the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic for many years. The design reflects the classic aesthetic of the Deutsche Grammophon 'Privilege' or standard catalog releases of the era, emphasizing a high-fidelity sound profile that was well-received by critics for its clarity and technical polish. It remains a definitive example of the mid-20th-century approach to standard orchestral repertoire.
