Klavierquintett A-dur Op. 114 (Forellen-Quintett)

Franz Schubert composed his Piano Quintet in A major, famously known as the Trout Quintet, in 1819 while visiting the town of Steyr. The work was commissioned by Sylvester Paumgartner, a wealthy music patron and amateur cellist who specifically requested that the quintet include a set of variations on Schubert’s own song, Die Forelle. This arrangement, unique for its use of a double bass rather than a second violin, reflects the lighthearted and melodic spirit of the era’s domestic music-making traditions.

The 1971 recording featuring Walter Olbertz and members of the Berlin String Quartet represents a specific period of East German chamber music documentation. Produced under the Eterna imprint, this interpretation is noted for its adherence to the precise, structural sensibilities common in GDR-era classical recordings.
