Where it came from
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed his two duos for violin and viola, K. 423 and K. 424, in 1783. He reportedly wrote them to assist Michael Haydn, who had been commissioned to produce a set of six such duets but had fallen ill; Mozart stepped in to complete the set anonymously to ensure Haydn would receive his full payment. These works remain celebrated for their ingenious use of counterpoint, which allows just two instruments to create the impression of a full, rich harmonic texture despite the inherent limitations of the pairing.
This specific recording featuring the brothers Régis and Bruno Pasquier was released in 1981 by the World Record Club. The label was known for its mail-order subscription model, which brought a wide range of classical performances to an international audience. The Pasquier brothers, both renowned French virtuosos, are recognized for their technical precision and deep familiarity with the chamber music repertoire, and this performance was lauded for its conversational clarity and the seamless musical rapport shared between the two performers.
