Provenance

Where it came from

Released by the prestigious French label Harmonia Mundi in 1981, this recording features the brothers Régis and Bruno Pasquier performing Mozart's Duos for Violin and Viola, K. 423 and K. 424. These works were originally composed in 1783 to help Michael Haydn fulfill a commission, as he was unwell and unable to complete the set for the Archbishop of Salzburg. Mozart famously anonymously contributed these two complex pieces to assist his colleague, showcasing his mastery of counterpoint within the intimate constraints of the duo format.

The Pasquier brothers, renowned for their long-standing chamber music partnership, were lauded for the clarity and technical precision of their interpretation. This recording was produced during a period when Harmonia Mundi was cementing its reputation for high-fidelity classical releases and intimate ensemble performances. The release is emblematic of the label's aesthetic in the early 1980s, focusing on natural acoustics and the seamless musical chemistry characteristic of long-term performing collaborators.
