Esta Noite Voce Vai Ter Que Ser Minha / Mande Nem Que Seja Um Telegrama / Cristo, Quem É Voce? / Eu Queria Ser John Lennon

Released in 1972 on the Polydor label, this four-track EP represents a distinct moment in the career of Brazilian singer-songwriter Odair José. Known for his blend of romantic balladry and social commentary, José frequently found himself labeled as a populist or kitsch artist by the elite intelligentsia of the time. The tracks on this record showcase his unique ability to bridge the gap between sentimental pop narratives and the grittier, everyday realities of the Brazilian working class during a period of significant cultural and political transition.

The record’s design and selection reflect the era's focus on the popular seven-inch format, which was the primary vehicle for reaching massive radio audiences in Brazil. Tracks like 'Eu Queria Ser John Lennon' illustrate the cultural influence of international rock on local artists, reinterpreted through the lens of Brazilian brega music. While initially dismissed by some critics for its simplicity, the release has since been re-evaluated by music historians as a significant document of the popular musical zeitgeist, capturing the unfiltered sentiments and aspirations of the Brazilian public during the early 1970s.
