Flux + Mutability

Flux + Mutability emerged in 1989 as the second collaborative studio album between former Japan frontman David Sylvian and Can co-founder Holger Czukay. Released on the Venture label, the record grew out of an improvisational partnership that began during the sessions for Sylvian’s 1987 album Secrets of the Beehive. Seeking to move beyond the structured pop sensibilities of their previous work, the two musicians utilized tape manipulation, ambient soundscapes, and spontaneous instrumental layering to create a fluid, experimental sonic environment.

The album is noted for its minimalist aesthetic and the stark, evocative cover art, which reflects the contemplative nature of the music within. Czukay’s influence as an avant-garde pioneer is prominent, pushing Sylvian’s lyrical and melodic tendencies into more abstract, ethereal territory. Upon release, the project was received as a challenging and introspective work, cementing the reputation of both artists as serious practitioners of sound art and progressive ambient music.
