Flux + Mutability

Flux + Mutability was released in 1989 on the Virgin label, marking the second collaborative studio album between former Japan frontman David Sylvian and Can co-founder Holger Czukay. This record emerged from an experimental period in the late 1980s where Sylvian moved further away from art-pop toward ambient soundscapes and improvisational compositions. The duo had previously collaborated on Plight & Premonition, and this follow-up continued their exploration of long-form, atmospheric textures.

The album's design and sound were heavily influenced by Czukay’s signature approach to tape editing and manipulation, which he blended with Sylvian’s distinctive, contemplative vocal style and interest in minimalist structures. Produced in Cologne, the work was received by critics as a challenging, impressionistic departure from mainstream music. Its ethereal quality and dense layering remain representative of the sophisticated, avant-garde collaborations that defined the experimental output of Virgin's roster during that era.
