Folk Psaumes

Folk Psaumes, released on the Select label in the early 1970s, emerged from the French liturgical folk movement that sought to modernize religious music following the Second Vatican Council. Raymond Fau, a central figure in this scene, collaborated with lyricist Jean Debruynne and composer Gaëtan de Courrèges to create accessible, guitar-driven arrangements of the psalms. The project was designed to move away from traditional organ-heavy church music, aiming instead for a communal, pastoral sound that could easily be performed in parishes and youth groups.

The aesthetic of the record reflects the modest, grassroots spirit of the era, focusing on simplicity and clarity of message rather than elaborate studio production. Because this music was primarily intended for practical liturgical use, it was received as a functional tool for worship and community building within Catholic circles in France and French-speaking Canada. Over time, it has become a nostalgic artifact of the folk-religious transition, valued by collectors of French sacred music for its authentic capture of the period's theological and stylistic shifts.
