Lore

Why it matters

Released on the GTO label in 1977, this compilation encapsulates the glam rock sound that defined Gary Glitter’s commercial peak in the early 1970s. While the record serves as a sonic artifact of that era’s stadium-oriented pop, its historical significance is now permanently overshadowed by the artist’s later criminal convictions, making it a polarizing item among collectors of music history.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1977 on the GTO Records label, Gary Glitter's Golden Greats serves as a compilation of the glam rock performer's most prominent hits from the early 1970s. During this era, record labels frequently issued 'greatest hits' packages to capitalize on the sustained popularity of glam rock icons, bundling chart-topping singles such as Rock and Roll Part 2 into a single collection for listeners who had previously only purchased 45-rpm vinyl singles.

The album reflects the high-energy, stomping production style characteristic of the Gary Glitter sound, which relied heavily on layered percussion and anthemic, crowd-oriented vocals. Designed as a straightforward retrospective of his commercial peak, the aesthetic and track selection were intended to evoke the spectacle of his televised live performances, though the record’s cultural legacy has been fundamentally overshadowed by the artist's subsequent legal history and societal condemnation.
