Where it came from
Released in 1977 on the GTO label, Gary Glitter's Golden Greats was compiled to consolidate the glam rock star's most successful charting singles from the early 1970s. Arriving during the tail end of the original glam era, the record served as a retrospective of a high-energy, bombastic sound that defined his career, featuring anthems like 'Rock and Roll (Part 2)' that had become staples of sports arenas and pop radio.
The album's design and track selection were aimed at maximizing the commercial appeal of Glitter's discography, presented in a standard sleeve typical of the era's compilation releases. While the music captured the commercial zenith of his chart presence, the subsequent decades brought a profound shift in the public perception of the artist, leading this record to become a complex artifact of pop music history that is now rarely discussed in the context of mainstream musical legacy.
