Gary Glitter's Golden Greats

Released in 1977 on the GTO label, Gary Glitter's Golden Greats was compiled to consolidate the glam rock performer's chart successes from the early 1970s. Arriving at a time when the initial wave of glitter rock was fading and punk rock was ascending, the album served as a commercial retrospective of his peak output, including signature hits characterized by heavy, stomping percussion and anthemic, shouted choruses.

The album reflects the production style of Mike Leander, who co-wrote and produced much of the material with Glitter. The aesthetic was a deliberate attempt to capture the high-energy, stadium-focused sound that defined the British charts between 1972 and 1975. While the music remains technically representative of the era's production standards, the record has since become a complex artifact, largely due to the subsequent criminal convictions and disgrace of the artist, which has resulted in its near-total exclusion from modern commercial circulation.
