Great Organ Works / Grandes Oeuvres D'Orgue / Berühmte Orgelwerke

Released by Decca in 1985, this recording features Gillian Weir performing a selection of Johann Sebastian Bach's most celebrated organ compositions. The album serves as a definitive showcase of Weir's virtuosity during a period when she was firmly established as one of the preeminent organists of the twentieth century. The production was part of Decca's wider commitment to high-fidelity classical recordings, capturing the nuanced acoustics of the instruments Weir chose for these sessions.

The design of the 1985 release reflects the minimalist yet authoritative aesthetic common to Decca’s classical catalog during the mid-eighties. By focusing on the essential nature of the music, the artwork conveys a sense of timelessness appropriate for Bach's repertoire. Critical reception at the time lauded the technical clarity of the engineering and the interpretive precision Weir brought to the complex polyphonic textures of the music, solidifying the record's reputation among organ music enthusiasts.
