Where it came from
Released in 1971 on the Decca label, this recording of Gregorian chant features the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard. The abbey, located in France, is world-renowned for its rigorous study and preservation of plainsong, having served as a primary source for the restoration of the chant's authentic rhythmic interpretation since the late 19th century.
Dom Joseph Gajard, who served as the choirmaster at Solesmes for decades, was instrumental in shaping the choir's distinct, ethereal vocal style which emphasizes a fluid, prayerful delivery over metronomic precision. This collection of the Kyriale and ancient litanies was produced to provide a liturgical document of monastic life, finding a dedicated audience among those interested in early music scholarship and meditative audio experiences during the early 1970s.
