Where it came from
Released by the East German state-owned record label ETERNA in 1983, this recording is part of a broader series dedicated to classical vocal works and German-language storytelling. The record serves as a showcase for high-quality domestic classical production, featuring a blend of musical compositions by figures such as Carl Loewe alongside the narration of traditional fairy tales and whimsical poetry. It represents the label's commitment to cultural preservation and the dissemination of high-art programming within the German Democratic Republic.
The production brought together notable talents of the era, including the tenor Eberhard Büchner and the pianist Norman Shetler. The curation reflects a common mid-20th-century approach to classical music education, pairing pedagogical or narrative pieces with formal vocal performances. These ETERNA releases were designed for a sophisticated listener base, emphasizing aesthetic presentation and faithful sonic reproduction, and remain well-regarded today by enthusiasts of the label's extensive catalog of Central European classical performances.
