Franz Schubert composed his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, known as the Trout Quintet, in 1819 while staying in Steyr, Upper Austria. It was written for Sylvester Paumgartner, a wealthy music patron and amateur cellist who specifically requested that the work include variations on Schubert's earlier lied, Die Forelle. The quintet is distinct for its instrumentation, substituting the standard second violin for a double bass, which provides a rich, grounded texture suited to the work's lyrical and lighthearted character.

This specific recording was released on the East German ETERNA label, a division of VEB Deutsche Schallplatten that was highly regarded for its commitment to high-fidelity classical captures of Eastern Bloc artists. The performance features pianist Walter Olbertz alongside members of the Berlin String Quartet, including violinist Karl Suske.
