Where it came from
Released in 1987 on the ITM Records label, this recording represents a niche intersection of German cabaret history and contemporary avant-garde jazz sensibilities. The album was produced during a period when the ITM label was actively archiving and reinterpreting the cultural artifacts of the Weimar Republic era, aiming to bridge the gap between historical German literary movements and modern improvisational music.
The project features the poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler, a central figure of German Expressionism, set against musical compositions by Heinz Becker and Karl-Heinz Stegmann. Through the vocal performances of Isabel Zeumer, the production sought to evoke the melancholic and surrealist tone of 1920s Berlin. It was received primarily within European jazz and experimental circles as a respectful, atmospheric homage to Lasker-Schüler's legacy rather than a conventional commercial release.
